A beginners guide to burning a candle

Updated: Mar 24, 2023

You’ve just purchased the perfect scented candle for yourself but you don’t know how to burn it to the base efficiently? We’re here to tell you 3 ways to maximise the output of your candles.

1. Trim the wick.

Trimmed wicks will give you a cleaner, more brilliant burn. Untrimmed wicks are significantly bound to take on an unusual mushroom like shape and candle will produce smoke.

Unreasonably lengthy wicks are a top reason for those frightful smoky stains that end up on your glass container candles. Managing the wick keeps the fire in charge and keeps those imprints from forming in any case.

Each time you want to burn your candle, start by trimming the wick to between 1/8 and 1/4 inches long. You can use scissors, nail clippers or a specialised wick trimmer, but no matter what you do, make trimming a habit.

2. Let the wax melt evenly

When your flame's lit, don't blow it out until the top layer of wax has evenly melted and the wax pool should reach as far as possible across till the inner surface of the glass. Not doing this can lead to tunnelling of the candle. That is when the wick starting to sink lower and lower, like a tunnel is forming right through the centre of the candle.

Each time you light the candle ensure that the melted wax reaches the sides of the container, the overall burning will remain perfect all the way down until the flame is spent.

3. Keep the flame away from free flowing air

Avoid the candle being in a place that its exposed to heavy wind gushes, near the fan or air conditioner. Failure to do so can lead to the flame moving haphazardly and blackening the rims of the candle glass.
